RIM's Legal Troubles Have Yet To Worry VARs

Research In Motion suffered another setback today in a legal fight that could force it to stop North American sales of its popular BlackBerry wireless e-mail service. But despite the ongoing turmoil, wireless solution providers seem mostly unconcerned that the legal squabbling will lead to a shutdown of the BlackBerry service.

Palm Announces BlackBerry Connect for Treo Smartphones

Palm, Inc. announced today that they will be making the Research In Motion (RIM) BlackBerry Connect platform available on the Treo 650 smartphone, as well as future Palm OS based Treo handsets.

BlackBerry Connect will provide the following services to the Treos:

  • Push-based email using BlackBerry Connect with Palm's VersaMail(R) email client,
  • support for Microsoft(R) Exchange and IBM Lotus(R) Domino(TM),
  • wireless calendar synchronization,
  • remote address lookup of corporate email directory,
  • convenient email-attachment viewing,
  • Triple DES encryption
  • IT policy enforcement and commands (such as remotely disabling or wiping email and PIM data from a device in the event it is lost or stolen).

BlackBerry Connect will be available on all new Treo 650 smartphones, and as an upgrade to existing units through select carriers starting early 2006. Pricing details have not been announced yet.
