I had recently purchased HP Mini Netbook. It comes with Windows XP Home Edition, so I decided to try out Windows 7 as I have aready started using it in my office laptop and it rocks!

Since HP Mini does not come with DVD drive, installation of windows 7 should be done from USB Flash drive. Its pretty straight forward though.

  1. Use Daemon Tools to mount the Windows 7 ISO image into a drive (Remember the drive letter)
  2. Use DISKPART utility to prepapre your USB Flash drive. You must have flash drive of at least 4GB. Follow the steps:
    • list disk (identify your flash drives, for my case its Disk 1)
    • You may want to select the disk by typing "Select disk 2" and run following commands
    • clean
    • create partition primary
    • select partition 1
    • active
    • format fs=fat32
    • assign
    • exit

Below is a screenshot from my PC about running DISKPART commands.

  3. Copy the windows 7 files from the ISO using Xcopy command, as below
    • xcopy h:*.* /s/e/f f: (these drive letters are in my test case, change the drive letters according to your system)
  4. Last but not the least, make USB Flash drive bootable in your system.

I hope this helps those who want to install windows 7 in similar systems
