Size Limits for Archive and Personal Storage Files (.PST)

In Outlook 2000 and Outlook 98, there is a 2 GB size limit to the file. HOWEVER, results are unpredictable once your .PST file grows above 1 GB

Symptoms

When you start Microsoft Outlook or try to open a personal folders (.pst) file or an offline folders (.ost) file, you may receive the following error message:

Errors have been detected in the file <file_path>. Quit all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox Repair Tool. where <file_path> is the path to the .pst file.

If you run the Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe), the file does not resolve the problem.

This problem occurs because the .pst and the .ost files have a 2 gigabyte (GB) size limitation, and the error message occurs when it is exceeded. The Inbox Repair Tool cannot correct this problem.

How to Avoid the Problem

When you notice a .pst file is growing close to 1GB (1,000,000 KB), create a new .pst file through Outlook, and begin saving data to that new file.
